How to Prepare for Your Hair Transplant Procedure

Once you and your doctor have determined that you are a candidate for either FUT or FUE surgical hair restoration, you may be somewhat apprehensive. By learning all you can about hair restoration, you will be more confident as you prepare for surgery. This webpage will serve as a guide to prepare you for hair transplant surgery.

Dense Hair Graft Packing

As the Greek philosopher, Plato said, “Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.” The same can be said of density. What one person considers dense, another person may view as less than adequate or sparse. The same number of follicular unit grafts or hairs placed over the same recipient area can appear totally different. The appearance of density is not only dependent on the number of grafts, but also on the color, quality, and texture of the hair.

Megasession Hair Transplants

The term “megasession” varies from office to office and from surgeon to surgeon. There is no defined number of grafts transplanted per surgery which is widely accepted among the hair transplant community. Some offices may label 2,000 or more grafts transplanted in one surgery as a megasession, whereas other offices may classify a megasession as 3,000 or more grafts placed in a single surgery.

No Scabbing After Hair Transplant Surgery

For many patients the thought of post-operative scabbing and crusts overlying the grafts for 2 to 4 weeks is enough to dissuade them from undergoing hair transplantation. Since the cosmetic visibility of scabbing is disconcerting to most patients, we tried to discover some product or technique that would prevent post-operative scabs from attaching to the grafts.

Faster Hair Growth After Surgery

We have found that healing the grafted areas faster post-operatively assists in shortening the shock phase and results in faster regrowth of the grafted hair. Our No Scabbing Technique helps to heal the skin without the typical post-op scabbing or crusting overlying the grafts. In addition, we have discovered that utilizing Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) post-operatively not only repairs the skin faster, but also increases the blood supply and circulation to the grafted areas. With an increased blood supply to the grafts, the follicles emerge from their shock and initiate hair growth much faster.

History of Hair Transplant Surgery

The use of both scalp flaps, in which a band of tissue with its original blood supply is shifted to the bald area, and free grafts dates back to the 20th century. Hair transplant techniques began in Japan in the 1930s, where Dr. Shojui Okuda, a Japanese Dermatologist used small grafts, and even “follicular unit grafts” to replace damaged areas of eyebrows or lashes, but not to treat baldness. Dr. Okuda’s efforts did not receive worldwide attention at the time, and the trauma of World War II kept this revolutionary treatment isolated for another two decades.
